In Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels, the comedy director wanted to produce a serious film. His film was to be called "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"
Sturges was my favourite writer of that period and the Coens of this period so this movie couldn't arrive in theatres soon enough for me. And I wasn't disappointed. This is a truly excellent movie.
O Brother is basically a Sturges-like version of Homer's Odyssey which requires no knowledge of Sturges or Homer. Although the fun is multiplied if you do. This Odyssey involves three escaped convicts as they try to get the buried treasure from a bank job.
What I appreciate most about Coen Brother's films is that they are Hollywood art. So while Hollywood films invariably go down the path of clichй and formula, O Brother takes a different route with twists and surprises. While art films invariably eschew plotting, the Coens insist on a superb satisfying story.
O Brother, like their previous eight films, encapsulate all that's best about film writing: the dialogue is sharp and witty and the visuals are stunning and sublime.
By necessity the music has to be of the period and although I'd prefer something along the lines of Britney Spears and N Sync, the music chosen for the film is worth getting the soundtrack for.
I should mention the acting which is superlative, especially Tim Blake Nelson, although to be honest I found a couple of the accents a little difficult to interpret. George Clooney gets the chance to prove his versatility and hopefully his presence will help make this movie a deserved breakout hit.
