Рецензии: Kaena is the totally french-made answer to such cgi productions as Ice Age, Toy Story, Final Fantasy and (to a lesser degree) Shrek. At the preview, one of the coproducers/directors told the audience that this film was 7 and a half years in the making (I should mention that he seemed quite young, and a very nice person. Furthermore, he seemed to be quite shy in front of the audience). [And, before proceeding, I should also mention that the preview was completely in french of which I only have a somewhat rudimentary knowledge, so surely some of the plot details were lost on me]
This is a SCIFI movie which (according to the coproducer/director) should be labelled more of a "fable". Its star, Kaena, is a teen member of a tribe on an alien world. Kaena has doubts about the gods to which the tribe pays tribute, and eventually finds herself on her own.
Unfortunately, the movie feels like an introduction to a slick video game. The backgrounds are quite nicely painted, but the characters' movements are somewhat unnatural, and not alot of attention has been paid to facial expressions (in contrast to, e.g., Shrek). There was little synch between the lips and the text in French, making me think that the original must have been in English instead for marketing to a broader audience. Lastly, there are a number of choppy sequences in the movie which, I can only assume, have been churned out quickly for a quick release, with the hopes of redoing these scenes later.
Then there's Kaena: Kaena seems to be modelled on Lara Croft (Tomb Raider). Kaena's outfit for the first half of the movie is much closer to a brazilian bikini than one would have expected, and has similarly "enhanced characteristics" brought out by her new wardrobe in the second half. (These outfits can become quite distracting)
It's too bad that the film felt somewhat bland. Maybe a little more humor would have helped (rarely did the audience chuckle), or perhaps characters which didn't feel like they'd been copied from other similar movies. Either way, the end result will probably appeal to the teenage crowd and be a commercial success.
