An oddly ham-handed contribution to the Bunuel canon: a smug,

pretentious Parisian (Jeanne Moreau) takes a job as maid to a

smug, cleanliness-obsessed family in rural france. The Old Man is

a grindly, wholesomely grinning fetishist who makes Moreau walk

around in a pair of yellow leather boots, then pulls them off her feet

and hides in the bathroom. The Husband (Michel Piccoli) is a

miserable runt, a would-be Lothario who lives off his wife's money

and diddles the maids; a look of perpetual insecurity is tattooed on

his mug. And the Wife is a run-of-the-mill bitch, bossing Moreau

around cruelly, and agonizedly accepting her husband's affairs,

because she believes herself to be physically unfit to engage in

coitus with the creep more than once a week. And that would be

considered a good week.

There is some savor at first to the Bunuelian cosmology of class:

we see the perfidy of the rich folks first, then go downstairs into the

servants' chambers and find anti-Semitism, stupidity, pointless

cruelty, and nascent fascism. CHAMBERMAID is the most far-spanningly misanthropic Bunuel movie I've seen; there are no

characters in it one might characterize as even passably ethical,

except a couple of proletarian cops, and a sweet, virginal child

(and guess what happens to her). All well and good, except that in

the last third the movie turns into a strangely, and unsatisfyingly,

plot-driven melodrama in which Moreau tries to prove a murderer's

guilt; simultaneously, it turns into an unsubtle satire of a certain

French penchant for xenophobic violence. Bunuel's targets are

usually less obvious than National Front bigots with crypto-Hitlerian moustaches. Probably, Bunuel meant this to be

his flirtation with commercialism.

One other oddity: did Moreau and Bunuel not get along on the set?

I can't think of a single movie in which a woman played the title

character and received fewer closeups.
