I admit that I was reluctant to see this movie after hearing about Garfield being a CGI animal (like Scoooby-Doo in the Scooby-Doo movie and look at what a piece of crap that movie was), but to my surprise, the movie actually didn't suck. In fact, it is actually one of the better movies I have seen in 2004.
A good, if not entirely faithful, adaptation of the enormously popular comic strip, the movie version of Garfield suffers from one major flaw in my eyes: I cared more about the people than the animals. The Jon story was way more interesting than the Garfield story. Breckin Meyer as Jon Arbuckle, the owner of the fat cat, is truly an example of perfect casting as is Jennifer Love Hewitt playing Liz. The plot is simple: Odie is kidnapped by an evil TV host and Garfield must come to his rescue. That's not exactly a brilliant plot, but it's a kids movie so it didn't bother me too much. What did bother me was the incredibly short running time (barely 73 minutes not including the credits). What is with movies these days? They keep getting shorter and shorter. Anyway, I'd give it three stars. Recommended for children as well as adult fans of Garfield.
